Question Dipping rock in fresh water - 02-05-2010, 03:05 PM

hmm isnt this supposed to kill anything on the rock? i had to scrub a few rocks yesterday because they were getting really nasty and i dont have $$ for a clean up crew atm. there were a few polyps on the rock i put in fresh water and scrubbed.... i figured they would die immediatly but they are all back open and seem to be happy in my tank.... does this mean it did not kill the algae either??

I have had my LR for about 15 yrs now and I wash it every couple years. I put it under luke warm water and scrub the rock with a soft bristle brush to clean them and my rock has TONS of critters on them still today.

Your criters will be fine.

Have a great day!

i have filled a tub with 80° saltwater and thrown in a heater and a power head, i dumped some pieces of live rock in it that were infested with Aiptasia hoping that the 2 month treatment will irradicate them, what are my chances of success, there is a lid on the tub to keep it dark.

That is called cooking the rock, it is usually done for 6 months in SW with plenty of water changes. It will kill everything in/on the rock.

Not really, when you cure LR you are just waiting for what is already dead to decompose so that you have rock that is safe to put in your tank. When you are cooking rock you are trying to kill what is on the rock.
