Cyano and Chemi-Clean -
09-03-2008, 10:10 AM
Well I've been dealing with a battle of Cyano latley. I've cleaned as much as I can by hand, changing 20% water weekly, cut back my photo period and I have a sump full of Calupra. I haven't used any GFO. I plan to get and use the Red Slime Remover by Chemi-Clean. Any percautions or recommendations while using this product?

i'd increase flow to that area, try the GFO and continue good husbandry before chemi clean

Agree ^
I'd also upgrade the skimmer before resorting to Chemi-clean.

I also believe in going natural, in a last ditch resort I used chemi-clean that was a year ago when I had the 55, I battled that stuff for so long, up my flow, siphoned, scrubed, cut my lighting time, bought many more turbos, just about everything, the chemi-clean did do the job, but when you use it if the cyano comes back and it can, if it does you CANT treat with chemi clean again, I was told that chemi clean is a antibiotic and kills bacteria if the cyano comes back it has built up an immunity to it and it wont work.

I'm not so sure increasing flow will work as its growing on my k3's and return jet. And the GFO justs helps remove PO4 correct? If so I've checked my WC water and it's not detectable and tank water either. I would upgrade the skimmer I just don't have a grand to do so at the momment. Last week I spent six hours cleaning the tank, walls, sand, rock, pumps, sump, skimmer, heaters. I must have emptied the skimmer 3 or 4 times during this time(filled with thick skim). Also did a 40 gl water change. And a week later you can't even tell that I did anything. It's just getting so frustrating, Thats why I was thinking to use chemi-clean to kill it all(the stuff I'm sure I missed) and do a good cleaning and rinse again and then replace alot of lost sand.

Right, GFO only decreases phosphates. You don't need to spend that much on a skimmer. You can get a good new one for a few hundred. Less for a used one.

Try the Chemi-Clean and then after the treatment run carbon. Make sure you take the carbon out during treatment. Chemi-Clean is not suppose to affect corals or biological filtration. Hmm . . . $5 treatment of Chemi-Clean or a $300+ protein skimmer to solve a cyano outbreak? Once the tank matures it'll eventually go away.

Upgrading the skimmer is one of many things that will help keep the tank healthy. I don't really believe in quick fixes. Often they just treat the symptoms and the problem comes right back. If he doesn't have the money, then he doesn't have the money, but I wouldn't just blow it off like it's a waste of money. I just don't think that a CoraLife SS can keep up with a 110 long term.

when I teat the tank with chemi-clean should I remove the macro algae? I will get a new skimmer by the end of next week. I believe I know why I have most of the Cyano. A while back I redesigned my sump and included a refugium. Well I was working with what I had and in the end the fuge section had an under current. So when I moved the calupra down to the sump it eventually died(too much flow). This is when I noticed more of a build up of Cyano. I have crorected that problem and I know a better skimmer is going to help alot more also.
