Small reef tank setup -

I am setting up a small reef tank for my parents for x-mas. I am using an Eclipse6 6 gallon tank. I know the tank is small but I want something that wont be too expensive for them after I get it setup. My question is, how many fish can I put in a six gallon tank and do I need any extra equipment outside of a heater for this tank because I hear they have great filtration and water movement? Thanks for helping a noob!
