ok i just got into this and am new to it. i currently have about a 45g tank set up with sand and live rock with a fluva 305 canister filter. i was thinking of adding CPR Aquatics AquaFuge 2 Large Hang-on Back Refugium w/ Pump & Protein Skimmer. or getting a sump that i can setup a refugium in with a protein skimmer. which would be better to do? i've heard mixed things with the aquafuge hang on the back refugium. and if the sump with refugium is better way to go then what are some good protein skimmers?

i also eventually plan on getting a bigger tank and would like to get the sump and protein skimmer or aquafuge regium bigger than whats needed for tank i have now so that it would be big enough for a bigger tank later on. im trying to do a reef tank.

not sure what type coral i want yet but some the fish id like are angels like flame angel, emperor, and bleenies maybe, mandarin, and not sure what else yet any ideas? and what would work best together or fish that dont go well together? appreciate any advice given,
thanks

I am thinking of getting back into a SW/Reef tank. I had one years ago, but sold it when I moved to a new house and never got back into it.

Anyway... here is my question. I have a 75 gallon glass aquarium that I 'acquired' from my son when he got out of his turtle obsession. It has been cleaned and sitting empty for many months. I have thought about selling it, but it is a really nice looking tank and stand, so then I considered getting back into the hobby. But the problem is that the stand is open in the middle with a couple of shelves and only enclosed on each end. That makes it impossible to have a sump unless I change stands.

It has been 10 years since I had my last tank and I am in a different place financially, so if I do this, I want to spend the money to do it right. So, my gut is telling me that going with a HOT skimmer wouldn't be 'doing it right'. So...if I have to change the stand, I am thinking that I should just sell the whole thing and start with a bigger tank.

Thoughts?

I may have made a mistake. I just setup a tank, and my wife fell in love with some sea horses. I asked the shop owner (he knows my tank setup), and he said they would make a great addition. So I bought all 3 of them in the tank ($180).

It was "touch and go" for about 8 hours. They were doing their heavy breathing bit, and seem to be fine now, exploring the tank and all. I attempted to feed them the next morning, and they seemed interested, but never took a bite (that I saw). I will try feeding them tonight at close to 24 hours after the drop last night. *fingers crossed*

However, I just began to wonder if we had a male/female couple in the tank and might be looking at seahorse babies in the future. I searched the forum, and came up with a thread, expressing how difficult it is to raise sea horses in captivity. They seem to be doing ok, and if they eat tonight, I'm in the clear... right? How do I know if things are starting to go downhill? Anyone experienced with sea horses in here? I just feel panicked now... like I may have stepped in too deep.

Now to the problem, I have a cube style 48 gallon tank in which was given to me, I have a cascade canister filter, the filter came with 3 trays, one with a coarse pad one with another filter pad, and carbon. What I would like to do is add bio balls to this setup for optimal bio growth, the problem im having is which trays should I put what, Thanks

After looking at our local pet shops and lfs, we didn't see anything we liked. So we decided to build our own. So we spent about $125 and about 1 1/2 days work and this is what we made. I have 2 250w halide lights put into the canopy. We left part of the top and back of the canopy open to have some of the light to escape, to have a glow coming from the tank. Although I was very nervous about breaking our tank down and moving it onto the new stand (about 4 very stressful hours) we are very happy with the result. Tell me what you think
