anenome looks like a common bubble tip to me. coral could be a pipe organ, or as steve said, clove polyps.

Does it look healthy to you guys?? I am not sure what this species is supposed to look like. I didn't even know I had it till this morning!

Looks fine to me.
Just a follow up to what michael suggested on the pipe organ... Do the polyps extend from the rock it's attached to or are they coming from redish/brown tubes within the rock formation?

The first one steve I am pretty sure. Otherwise they would have been hollow holes in the LR b4 they emerged right?? Is that frogspawn??

Yes PH fantastic speciemens of LR from outskirts of Great Barrier Reef.
Nope.. It's definately a clove polyp.
I now know that this is the clove polyp. I was referring to the other kind you where talking about??? What type was that??

WOW! I never knew that they accually harvested live rock off the great barrier reef. Kind of a shame, really.

The other type that was refered to was a pipe organ coral Tubipora musica, which does look almost identical in polyp formation to the clove but as you already pointed ot it retracts into a hard tube.

THATS IT STEVE!!!!
That is the same stuff as my stuff. The closed polyps on that gif are what it looked like yesterday before extention. The polyps are fern like tentacles??? Thats what mine are. The detail just musn't have come out in the Photo.

OUTSKIRTS!! meaning surrounding areas. IT IS ILLEGAL TO TAKE STUFF FROM THE GBR. Most of southeast coast is fringing on bottom of GBR.

I could be wrong steve. Do the two look extremely similar????
steve1s
01-17-2003, 11:09 AM
The polyp flowers can look identical but only the pipe organ will have the calcerous tubes, the clove polyp will just have fleshy tubes that the polyp retracts into.
If you look at the pic you posted just above the Trachyphyllia sp one of the polyps is extended away from the rest, I see no calcerous tube. That is why I thought it was a clove. You will be the best judge as to what it would be since you can see it when it is retracted.

If that is so about the polyps looking the same then it is the clove. :D

Its illegal unless you have a licence. Most of the rock you guys get in brisbane and the rest of Aus comes off the barrier reef. The corals you see in the LFS are collected from areas of the barrier reef too. I know a few licenced collectors here and they all have a quota limit. Some more than others. Could be 5 tons a year for coral and rock.
WOW! I never knew that they accually harvested live rock off the great barrier reef. Kind of a shame, really
Not really. A great deal of rock is collected from areas where its been broken off the reef during storms. That and the estimated coral growth of 450 million tons a year on the barrier reef mean taking a small amout of that growth causes no problem at all. Tourists and tourist boats do more damage than collecting.
I go out often with licenced colletors and its only when your out there that you see how huge the barrier reef is. I've also seen acropora frags washed up on the beach here from time to time after a storm.
A point also to bear in mind is the live rock and coral collection from the barrier reef is only for the domestic market. Its illegal to export corals and live rock from Australia. Fish may be exported and are in large numbers but no coral.

My point excactly viking. :D It is illegal for the common person. Licences are around $1200 AUS or there abouts. 8)

Actually its just changed mate. All the old stuff is out the window and even some current collectors are going to find making a living hard under the new rules. Basically no new licences will be issued as i understand it. Those current licence holders have to show records of coral and fish sales over the past few (cant remember how many) years so thier quota's can be set based on past sales. Not good for those collectors who didnt keep good records, if you know what i mean?

No not me. I have mates who are collectors and i just go out with them from time to time. It not good me going out. I cant stop myself from bringing back something new every time :D

Oh ok. :) That is a pity. I was planning on getting one. :( Is it not possible to aquire a license for say Bundy to South Stradbroke areas??
Any reefs between those two places are not part of the GBR I am pretty sure. :? Can't wait to see some of the great specimens you aquire. :)

Viking, i would like to see pics of your tank with your personally hand collected corals.
I tend to give away the better ones, i dont have much by the way of lighting and also keep alot of anemones in the tank which would not be so good for the corals.
I mostly try out corals for the collectors to see how well they do. I also have a great number of corals given by collectors when it looks as if they might not make it in the holding tanks. Usually bleached corals that may or may not make it..
Also i'm not very good at taking photos.
Here will give you some idea. http://www.fishyfrolics.com/viking/

I looked at the site, but none of the pictures would load. It may be my computer though.

Please elaborate on this some more. Correct me if Im wrong, but I thought anenomes required lots of light. Dont they also have a symbiotic relationship with zooanthane algae that grows in there skin, like corals?

there are some deeper water species that are more dependent on suspension feeding, and photosynthesis. therefore do not require intense lighting.

Never found an anemone yet that you cant keep with a 150 MH light. Even a ritteri i have is doing fine. Grown from a 1/2 inch bleached blob into a real nice anemone hosting a pair of breeding ocelaris clowns.
The 150mh lights just dont seem up to keeping some corals though long term unless they are just under the lights.
Pictures should load ok from the site. Others have seen them ok. ?

Viking, I am after a BTA... have you sent any of your livestock around QLD?? I am looking for a host to a couple of tomato clowns I plan to get in the future. It would be great if I could get some feedback as to wether you can or not. :)
I just know that getting a BTA from Cairns would be better than any LFS BTAs.

Well maybe, maybe not? Remember most of the bta's you find in the LFS would have come from here.
I've never shipped any my self but have sent corals to Victoria before. I dont like shipping stuff as i'm not geared up for that. I did give away a real nice BTA a few weeks back. I got it as a baby on some rock and it grew too big for my system. Real nice green colour.
Might be a while before i go out again but if your still looking then i'll keep an eye out.

Viking,
It seems like you have had some great success raising anenomes. Any secrets you can pass along to the rest of us?
viking
01-21-2003, 06:06 AM
Micheal,
Problem is i dont know why, well not for sure and what i think might well fly in the face of what the experts tell us.
For example i dont feed them that much. Maybe once a month or if i'm taking care of a bleached one maybe a little more. Sure no where near what some would advise. Dont know if this is the answer but its working so far. Apart from that i have no real idea.
Cheers,
Viking.
