Great looking photo :) The watchman and pistol shrimp aren't bad either :)

Sorry, I couldn't tell you... all I know about the camera is that it was big, heavy, expensive and wielded by the talented hands of Greg Rothschild (http://www.gregrothschild.com/)! :)

Most of the pictures on my website are taken with a Sony Mavica. I'll ask Greg to chime in and tell us about the camera used for this particular photo.

Yea.
Canon highline cameras are good.
I have a Canon EOS A2 35mm (Nothing like 7 shots per second) with a Sigma standard/macro 28-80 lense and a Sigma Telephoto 170-500 (1:5-6.3) and all the little trimings.
The setup above cost me $3k [Give or take about $100] (Retail would have been over $4.5k)
I will post some photos I took when I was in the Amazon Rainforest in Peru back in 2001.
Anyway...if you got the cash to spend and want a GOOD camera...go with Canon.

i'm more partial towards the nikon system...i shoot on a 4004 right now, and have quite a few lenses...
it's my hope to get either get a nikon D100 (built on the N-90 frame) or a fuji S2Pro, (also built on the nikon N-90 frame)...the D100 is a bit over 5Mp, and the S2 is in the 6+Mp bracket, although, ideally the S2 has the capability to record over 12Mp's with Super CCD (much higher compression)...
respectively, the D100 runs $2G's, and the S2 about $2,600...
this is an awesome digital camera link!!!

Back to the pistol shrimp and the watchman. I have always found the symbiotic relationship entertaining. But Ive heard the pistol shrimp will make a loud snapping noise. especially at night. Is that true?

I don't hear the pistol shrimp very often, but it will snap now and then. Usually it's because the scarlet serpent star is in the way when the shrimp wants to start a new tunnel, or if one of the banded coral shrimps gets too close.

Whats the minimum recommended sand depth for a pistol shrimp?

i'd say a bare minimum of 2".

i sent a photo in- haven't heard back yet though- keeping my fingers crossed! thanks for that-
i have a Watchman Goby and Pistol Shrimp myself and i don't think i've heard the clicking sound. they are really fun to watch and even though the shrimp can be a bit of a pain (burying whatever happens to be where he wants to put sand- which is most often mushrooms) i'd never get rid of him.
