I here just bad things about them.
The main problem people have is that they leak oil in to the tank!!!

heard once that a rio grounded out, and was shorting in the tank, frying everything, corals included...just a blue arc of electricity pulseing in the water...

i have 2 rio 600's and haven't had a problem...

I also have a rio 600 and have never had a problem with it.
Except for the time when i didn't have my return line connected properly and it blew off..spraying water straight up into the air...not a pretty sight
But other than that i have never had a mechanical problem with it.

Dispite the storys about RIO's killing off the whole tank, i've had nothing but good results from them. I have 3 RIO's (1200) for over a year now, and so far no problems with them ever breaking down. Ocationally one made a funny noise, but stopped about 10 minutes later on. I also hear Maxi Jet powerheads are good, and I do plan to switch to them later on.

The one problem I have been having is that when turn the power off it will not start back up again.

more than likely salt deposits...

you can give your pumps a vinegar bath...great preventive maintenance step!

They are also very easy to clean.

Just pop the bottom off (you should see a line where the top and botom seperate).

You will find a round dial thing. On the dial will be two areas that are flat. Rotate them around till they are in position with the two clips and just pull that round dial thing off.

Take the impeller and ceramic magnet out. CLean up the impeller and ceramic magnet assembley.

Clean up the inside of the main powerhead body.

Clean up the inside of the bottom impeller cover.

Put it all back together and you should have a RIO PH that is just as good as new.

I had a RIO 600 that had gotten very nosiy. Almost like the impeller was rubbing aganst something. I took it apart and cleaned everything up with just some saltwater. Put it back together and now it runs silent again.

I have a few of those pumps and they all work great.
2100, 3 x 1700, 800(Chiller). There is the slight prob sometimes (as phistio mentioned with the salt deposits) in that small particles of gravel or limestone(liverock particles) get caught in the impeller. This is easily remedied of course though it can cause a small mishap in the filtration or circulation of the tank. This rarely happens if the powerhead(pump) has its proper foam block insert. Happened to me once hopefully can avoid it in the future. :)
