I've seen a few people ask about the noise from a Skimmer in the sump. IMO most of the noise is from the water splashing as it comes out of the skimmer and hits the surface of the water. Most skimmers have a lip to hang on the side of the sump or tank.
I cut a hole on the lid that covers the bio balls to accomadate the skimmers output lip and hang it on the top of the bio filter. This way the output water from the skimmer gently flows back onto my prefilter and then runs back down over the bio balls for a second pass. The splashing noise is gone.
I'm not sure if it increases the bio balls effectiveness but in my opinion it puts highly oxgynated water back through the arobic bacteria media and allows a second pass for more breakdown of ammonia.
