i read an article on how to eliminate skimmer collection stink. add some calcium water ((concentrated calcium hydroxide) just a few drops, this will raise the p.h. in the skimmer collection chanmer, when the p.h. is raised it will kill the bacteria that make the smell go away

:) Pour a pack of bicarbonate or baking soda into a 1/2 Lt container & leave it in the corner of the room where the tank is & that will help obsorb the skimmer odour. You can put a cup full in the fridge to do the same thing to. Replace when the stink comes back.

Here's what I did:
Most skimmers have a drain in the collection cup for the skimmate to empty into a larger container. If not it can easily be put in. Use a 3/4" hose barb. I have mine emptying into an old B-Ionic gallin jug, modified as follows:

The system is airtight except through a PVC "air filter" containg activated carbon, screwed to the cap of the gallon jug. I used a 2" PVC tube, 3" long, with a 2" to 3/4" step down on the bottom to attactch to the jug, and a cap on top (it has many holes cut in the cap). Aa long as your skimmer and collection cup are airtight, as most are, all the air leaving the skimmer is sent through the filter, and it does not stink at all!
