I set up a qt to treat for an ich outbreak so far my qt is a 10gal with a small heater, an airstone, and a reptile screen over the top.

questions:
1. Do I need a filter on this? If I do there will be no biological filtration built up and the carbon has to be removed for treatment thus leaving only mechanical filtration, whats the point?

2. If I don't need a filter can I use ammonia absorbing resin to control ammonia or what about amquel (sp?)

3. Since I have FO, how is the biological filtration in my main tank going to continue to survive if there are no fish in it producing ammonia? Should I put some frozen brine in there and let it rot?

Thanks in advance

I have substrate in my QT but I know alot of people do not. If you do not have substrate there is no bio filtering anyway and water changes to keep your parimaters in check should work. You will need to do these mutiple times a week. I keep substrate in mine and run a penguine mine with a bio wheel. This has served me well. I just dump some food in from time to time and have never had a problem. I am just about finished with purchasing fish for my tanks and will either give it to a friend to use since he is setting up a new tank or break it down and start over when I decide to get new fish.
