20gallonman

alright, so i put some new damsels in my 20 gallon tank, and they were immediately chased and harrased by my current fish. I previously had a blue velvet and a blue devil damsel, and a skunk pseudochromis. I added 2 dominos, a yellowtail and a 4 stripe damsel. So i turned all the lights off, and 3 of the new damsels are hiding in a corner together. any suggestions? ya i know, most people hate damsels and will tell me to get rid of them, but they're cheap, i'm in college, and can't afford anything else right now! any comments or suggestions are welcome! thanks!

there is nothing wrong with enjoying a cheap damsel fish as long as u take care of it and dont just get them without knowing how to care for them properly... damsel fish are cheap and i have found them to be hardy, colorful, lively, and a good addition to any tank, especially for beginners. i have been running a 12g nano cube with live sand and live rock for about 2 months now and have damsel inhabitants...

although some can be more aggressive than others.. esp the ones that are already in ur tank... in order to lessen the territorial manners u can change the set up of the tank.. (move live rock around, for example) so that the tank is not familiar or territory that the previous inhabitants mite want to protect...

damsels are very lively and school fish so they are a treat to have in tanks as well..........

I agree completely. Although some of the damsels are drab, others are extremely bright, & are overlooked too often IMO. My blue damsel is one of the more active fish in my tank, & even though he's the smallest BY FAR, he holds his own with a BIG trigger, tang, Thalassoma wrasse & cinnamon clown, all of which are known to be mean. And under the lights, he absolutely GLOWS bright, sparkling blue. Not bad for a $3 fish! Yellow tangs are overlooked too, because they're so common. What else will add that much bright color to your tank for $15? You don't have to spend a lot on fish, you just have to shop around & make up your own mind.

Some damsels have admiradle characteristics. I have had one domino for almost a year now and he just about runs one of my tanks. He stands up to my adult lion fish chases around my other larger fish and put his backside in my 2 ft morray face w/o any fear, its hilariuos.Any new fish small or large put in the tank become subject to ridicule by my tiny damsel with a tough guy attitude.
