View Full Version : When you see a reef\fo tank at a
restaurant or something do you tend to ask questions?? I have been noticing that many there know nothing about it. All done by a company love to see a store take a stab at it.

Yes Im the worlds worst and my wife hates it! Especially if I see the tank in dissaray!! I feel its my duty to inform people when they have something wrong to try and correct it so as not to lose livestock! My wife cringes when we go into our local Chedders Resturant because she knows Im going to give the manager the 3rd degree about the HUGE tank they have everytime we go there!

we actually have a local fish store that has a crew of people that take care of tanks in the area. I must say they do a good job. You can always tell when it is one of their tanks. They are well maintained.
I wonder how much the stores pay for that service.....

More than it is worth to just learn how to do it yourself.. hehe. I use to know a guy that worked at my LFS and would do it for big business/retirement homes. He charged them per gallon... I think it was $1 or so per gallon each visit. LIke if he had to clean a 50 gallon tank once a month he would charge them 50 bucks do to so... a 90 gallon tank $90 dollars a visit. Seems a bit high to me... after all all he did was bring in SW premixed at his home to do water changes.. and simpley clean the tank.... didn't take him more than 2 hours...
I was knocking that idea around a few months back, I helped set up a few tanks at a friends business for a couple of bucks and it was fun, quick, and made some cash.

Well... People often get paid for what they know instead of what they do. I think the $1 per gallon is a pretty good rate for upkeep on the tanks. I know a guy who owns a LFS and he cleans tanks and ponds. I don't know how much he makes, but the store is closed Sun-Wed because he is out cleanning. He said that cleanning the tanks and ponds takes care of the operational cost of the business. He keeps a stock of dry goods, coral, and fish as a service to the community (and a little profit too)... and he has the best shop here in Memphis. If he'd only let me do him a web site in exchange for that VHO Retrofit Kit and some SeaChem additives! Maybe one day. :P
