I don't like the idea of having a paper background on the back of my tank, so instead, I'd like to paint it.
Is this a bad idea? And how would I go about doing it?

Now, I'm not sure if I am wrong about this, but I have heard that you should neve apply any type of chemical to the outside of a fishtank, as eventually it may permeate through the glass and into the tank. Is this bogus? I thought it may be possible on thinner glass and acrylic?

I see your point here since glass really isn't concidered a solid; however, I would say its a non-issue.
Its almost like saying if you leave water in the tank long enough will it eventually seep out through the glass? To the best of my knowledge....No. :)

Thanks for the link, that's perfect.
Also, I doubt that paint will seep through the glass or edges like salt creep tends to because it is a dry material not a solid that is diluted in water.
Also I wouldn't be painting it while the tank is full, it would be empty and dry at the time.

i painted all my old tanks and im paiting this new 1. never had a problem in the 10 - 12 years or what ever of having tanks and painting them. great thing with painting a tank is if u tire of the color you take a window scraper and take it off and repaint it. just remeber if u spray it put a trash bag over the opening and tape it shut. make sure no paint or over spray gets into the tank cause that will cause you problems even if you get it off.
