Dosing Kalkwasser:
I’ve come across a simple method to drip Kalkwasser mix to my tank. Learn this from watching the guy at the LFS add water to his new stock of fish so he could add them into the main display tanks. All he did was use 2 pieces of airline tubing and air value to adjust the water going into the buckets. Slowly adding water to the buckets with the new fish soon got the new fish adjusted to the water conditions in his setup. Figure I could use the same method for dosing Kalkwasser and it works great. Only draw back is value and tubing must be replaced after a couple of months because of it getting clogged. Use old plastic 1g milk bottles to store the water. If you catch this setup before it runs out Kalkwasser water to drip, you can simply move the hose from one milk bottle to another without restarting the flow.

yea right........my wife would love to see a gallon jug setting on top of my tank in the middle of our living room! A beautiful tank was one of the reasons she agreed to this huge expense!
Good idea though!

I am sure there would be an easily built concealment cabinet to hold such a set up...shouldn't be that hard.
I did find a diy project similar, but works slighty different. If I can find it, I will post a link. Seem to have lost it in the clean up somewhere... :?
this may sound stupid but what is kalkwasser? i am new to this and i have heard this word but have no idea what it is. i have a 90 gal reef tank set up dec 2002 and have never used this. any help you can give me would be great

kalkwasser is german for "lime water".
kalkwasser is saturated solution of calcium hydroxide in water, the use of which precipitates phosphate, maintains a high pH and enhances protein skimming while boosting calcium levels.
ok...now in english...
it is a powder, that when mixed with fresh water adds calcium to your tank. there are many ways of introducing calcium into your tank, but in my personal experience...none are better than kalkwasser.
thanks for the info. i use kent marine superbuffer kdh and bio calcium once a week, is this kind of the same thing? i am sorry for all the questions but when i purchased the tank and they came to set it up this is what thay told me to use. i feel like i need a degree in biology and math to understand all this. one step at a time i guess?

First Post!
I have recently been looking into dosing calcium supplements as suggested by this thread. I have a 50gal fish and invertebrate tank and wanted to know how I would go about insuring I had the calcium mix dripping into my tank at a steedy enough rate to maintain appropriate calcium levels? Do you guys use guess and test or do you know by experience?
Oh, I found a drip doser here for anyone who wants something better than a "milk jug sitting on top" :D

i was thinking the same thing. only bummer is i just got the new pc w/moonlihght and the strip light has a curved top so i couldn't just set the milk jug on it. i do have space to the right of the tank and i was thinking of putting a 5 gallon bucket of kalk there on some sort of stand or just a chair, then dripping by the same method you mentioned into the sump. what do you think?

It is like an IV drip bag.
I wonder if you can use an IV?

check this out. I use the I/V line. It works awesome, just dont run it out of the bottom of the jug or you wont get a steady drip. I have used it for Kalk, and it works fine, but I think kalk is a pain, and have switched to a much more simple method.

B-Ionic two part additive. I just add the doses every morning, no mixing, no dripping, and way better results. I almost started using kalk as a suppliment to the B-Ionic, because I have a pretty high calcium demand, but decided to just trade more frags for free b-ionic. It can get expensive, and it does create a demand for itself.
