View Full Version : frogfish care????
I can't seem to get alot of infomation on how to keep smaller-sized frogfish in an aquarium. My LFS just got in a large variety of colored frogfish and those unusual characteristics immediately caught my attention  My tank is a 29gal reef with just 1 snowflake eel as an inhabitant. Do any of you have any info on how to care for those little critters? Thanks!

You might have a problem with the eel, I don't know how big your eel is but if the frogfish is pretty small then he might be in danger. They aren't active fish and are ambush predators, so they really shouldn't have other fish with them unless they are very large. Their feeding habits are rather similar to your eel.
My eel is only a baby. He's not the one I'm concerned about... I'm more worried that the angler will 'try' and eat the eel if they come into contact. Afterall, they do have huge mouths. What do you think?

It could be a concern depending on the size of the frogfish. My philosophy in these cases is better safe than sorry.

first off you wont really have a true reef with these 2 fish in the tank.
the eel will get very long in to the 2-3' department and will very fast.
the angler will get over 12" and perfers live food. they arent the easiest thing to keep and arent a good begginer fish. they grow to a decent size and need a 30 plus with very limited live rock for a hunting territory they can eat in(open space). they are very sloppy eaters and living fish so this also provides a excellent skimmer and filtration system. they require almost nothing but live food as very few have ever been wheened onto frozen. they can very easily become over fed and then will stop eating. if you still insist on getting 1 moniter the feeding very close and only do it once or twice every day or 2. i have known people to have good luck with ghoust shrimp but also brine and mysis. live gold fish are useless and guppies are almost just as bad as they are starting to transmit alot of diseases like gold fish do. if your a novie or moderate saltwater hobbiest id say its prob best you pass on this unusual fish. hope this helps.

i disagree with cobra that the angler will be 12". I have a 5" adult wartskin, there are several species of frogfish that stay under 8" adult size. But i do agree that you need a bigger tank & the moray isnt a good fish for that size of tank at all. Go buy a good book & read up on what you want dont take our words for it...

I keep 3 anglers (2-wartskin, and a RARE Lophiocharon lithinostomus)
The commerson is REALLY the only Large angler availible in the Trade, and they are easily identified. most stay under 8"
