If I put sand in an acrylic tank will it scratch the sides? Do I even want sand?

Thanks

To sand or not to sand that is the question.

You should research what you want your tank to look like (Mostly personal preference) and then decide what method you would like to use. There are so many different ways/opinions that you need to decide what you like to look at and then choose the method you think best. I know this is vague but it ultimately your personal preference.

I was told that sand help balances your tank the best. Is that true? I have no idea what I am doing and trying to get started.

thanks

some type of substrate will help with the bacteria growth. If your new I would suggest using some. Probably atleast 1 lb per gallon of tank size. There are many ways to have a bacteria system. Live rock is probably the best. I have seen tanks with no substrate and loaded with live rock that were awsome. I would suggest alot of reasearch before starting. Determing if you want fish only, reef, fish only with live rock. Here is a site that can help get you started.Garf (www.garf.org). I know I post this site alot but It helped me when I started.

Thanks. Starting out seems pretty overwhelming. I have decided on fish/live rock only.

GARF is a great site and could never be overposted!

What you need to worry about with sand in acrylic is mostly while cleaning. If it gets in your magnet or whatever and you're rubbing it against the sides.
