I am getting ready to purchase some LR from a local that is offering it very cheap. I currently don't have anywhere to put it right now and was wondering if I bought a rubbermaid container and put a shoplight on it w/ two NO bulbs would work. If it will which kind of bulbs should I get (1 50/50 and 1 actinic, 1 actinic and 1 daylight, you get the picture) I am only interested in keeping everything alive on the rock while I prepare my FO tank to become a reef. Thanks for all of the help.

Yes, That would work just fine. Like zack said, you should use a power head. I would buy a Maxi Jet 600 power head to stick in there, to get some current in the tank. Without it, detrius can settle, and start to rot away. Since most of the life on the live rock in non photosynthetic (Dusters, worms, etc) your lighting will do just fine. Even the polyps and rock boring clams can likely live with the NO lighting. Is this rock cured, or un cured?

Pineapple House: The rock started out in an established aquarium but has since been given to the guy that I am buying it from. I will find out tonight where and how he is keeping it. He said that it has very little life on it and that it had some coraline patches starting. My question is can LR be rejouvinated? Or is this rock destined to become base rock? Anyway, I should have more info sometime tonight when he e-mails me some pic's.

Also as you and Zack S. have stated I will be putting a power head in there. I have 2 @ 200 gph that I use for my pre-mixed saltwater container. I will probably take one of them out and use it for the LR. One more question: Should I put a skimmer on the container w/ the LR? (cause of the condition it is in as stated above)

Thanks for the help guys!!

While having most of the life dead is a bad sign, you can still easily rejovonate it. It will take awhile, but it can be done. When you place it in the main tank, I would recommend mixing some cured freshrock (lots of life, fiji is known for having lots of life, same with TBS) in with the almost dead rock. With this in there, the life will spread much faster.

While it would be good to have a skimmer in the tank, you don't need to. You can, but it wouldn't be nessisary.

I argee with pinapple house about the skimmer that is very contrevertable. But I would not recoomened it on the curing procces or holding procces. The powerheads should good!
Good luck!

I agree when cycling the tank you don't need the skimmer running it can be a great way to get more oxygen exchange in the water which can help during the cycling proccess.
