Im trying to get a head start for when my Eco system arives.

The pump a bought is an Iwaki. There are two inlet / oulets. I know that one is for the water comming in from the eco system and the other returns the water to the tank.

The question is.....how do I tell the inlet from the outlet? The pump did not come with instructions. One faces "up" and the other one comes strait out of the pump (horizonal)

The pump I have is the WMD 30rlxt

No such thing as a stupid question huh?

Go with the 'trial-and-error' way. Test one way, and if it doesn't work, do it the other way. You have a good 50% chance of getting it the right way the first time.

IMO, I think the out pointing downward would be the inlet, taking water from the sump, and taking it to the top of the tank, which would go out the outlet

...no such thing as a stupid question :)

The connector pointing up is the outlet and the horizontal is the inlet

This is how I help myself remember which is the inlet and outlet. The outlet is the one that requires the pump's help. In this case, it would be the one going against gravity and thus vertically.

If it were reversed, then the pump would be useless because gravity would be enough to bring the water down into the vertical shaft.
