How much rock is in your current tank? Over the years I have noticed that I can add as much as 15% of my current rock weight and not notice a single reading change in water parameters.

My favorite way to cure rock, if it isn't curened already, is buying a nice trashcan, or large rubbermaid container from wall mark, buying a couple strong power heads, and a haeater, adding the rock to the trash can with power heads and the heater, and wait a week or so. Be sure to test the water in the can/container on a regular basis. The rock should be cured in no time :) Just to be on the safe side, I wouldn't add it all at once, just about a quater or half, just to be on the safe side.

Soaking the rock in freshwater, esspecielly for an extended period of time, can easily kill off inhabitants on the rock. I would difinitaly put it in prepared saltwater first!

i think the freshwater bath was suggested FOR die off...and most likely suggested, so that the die off wouldn't cause a huge ammonia spike...but ther'll be one regardless. it's a matter of trying to control that spike...

also, keep in mind, if you are to put the un-cured live rock in either slowly, or all at once there will be a cycle, or series of mini-cycles all over again...even in a well established tank.

I have never heard of a freshwater dip or bath for live rock. I would thing that would be more negitive than the time the rock is out of the water durring shippment.

I use the same method that pineapple does. The only thing I do differently is that when I get the rock I give it a good looking over. I rub off any sponges I see and also anything that looks dead or smells foul. Then I dunk it in saltwater a few times to rid the rock of any dust/dirt from shippment.

After a few days of curing I usually setup a second trashcan next to the first and transfer the rock from 1 to the other and while its out of the water I again check for dead or dieing items, rubbing them off as I see them.

This method usually takes about 2 weeks to cure the rock, depending on die off.

If its truly going to be in transit for 4 days then I fear your cured live rock will be very far from cured when you get it.

Well where are you getting the rock from? TPS? If it from there you are going to want to get a large tub and fill that with saltwater. Then maybe add a skimmer on the side along with any extra lights you may have. Then to remove some of the unwanted to crabs I would place a piece of plext glass across the tub at a 45 degree angle. Then bait the otherside with a piece of shrimp. So then the unwanted crabs will go to the otherside and be stuck. They can then be easily removed, and you can keep the things you want: | / |
