Hey everyone,

My tank is in my living room right now. :D I have my digital camera ready to take some pictures, maybe someday I will have a little site with a log of my new reef.

I have the tank, the stand, the pump, heater, salt, test kit, and a bunch of other stuff.

I am waiting on the Eco system that should be here Thursday (hopefully) I am installing my vho's into the hood next week as well.

The only other thing I have to decide on right now is where to get my live rock. The LFS would be a lot easier, but more expensive.

Just wanted to share my good news!

Jason

hey.....a couple questions
What do I clean my acrylic tank with to get the figure prints off?
and, do you guys suggest me building a "foundation" to hold my live rock. You know the kind out of pvc pipe?

Thanks!!!

Hey
glad to here about the tank. What size is it? About the LR, Getting it at the lfs does mean a lot more money for most people, but you get to chose your pieces. Buying from online is so much cheaper, but you get what you get. good luck with what you do. To get fingerprints off I would say to just clean with water or their are special rags made for those kinds of tanks. Keep us updated.

Zack,

The tank is 135 gallon. I guess I never thought about it that way. You would not really know what you are getting utill it is here.

Thanks!

yep, there are some places where you can tell weight and shape of a rock, but hard to find those places. By the way, how much is lr at lfs?

I agree with zack.

The finger prints should come off quite easily with just a nice clean cloth, and some water. You can just scrub it down. Try not to use any soaps, or 409, or any type of glass cleaner, this might harm your future inhabitants.

Second, I don't use any foundation for my live rock. I fouind the best results is when adding some live sand to the tank (about 1/2"), adding some live rock down around the bottom, and then adding some live sand (about 3-4") around the rocks. This will hold your rocks in place, and I have had great results doing this.

Third, I personally would go ahead and buy the live rock from your LFS. Most people buy a little at a time, so money won't be too much of an issue, than lets say if you buy it all at once. When buying the rock, you are able to look at the shape, color, size, weight, and life thats on it. When shipping, most of the time you will get random peices of rocks, which might not be the best in condition.

Best of luck,

PH =)

Getting Lr from your lfs however can be 3-4 times as much money. I found out that I bought 20lbs at lfs for $120 where i could have gotten like 50lbs for $100 shipped. People are also always selling their LR for good prices as well and when it comes out of a mature tank it is usually good. Anyway if you got a lot money yeah lfs, but it can be expensive! Good luck! 8)

The LFS charges $5.99 plus a 10% discount for "fish club memebers" ($5.30 per lbs) for fiji (sp?) rock.

They said that if i purchase 250lbs they would reduce the amount to $4.50 per lb. Still a good chunck of money.

I could do what PH says and just buy a little as I go. Is it ture though, that Your tank will do a new "mini" cycle each time you introduce a good amount of live rock?

also....I bought a test kit at the lfs. it includes ph, ammonioa, nitrite, nitrate and alkalinity. What other test do you guys suggest?

thanks
Jason

Just to chime in on the LR question. I have a friend that bought all his rock from Flying Fish Express (www.ffexpress.com) and it is absolutely gorgeous. It is covered in brilliant purple coralline as well as others. He bought the premium Fiji and as of Dec. 13th they are selling a 45 lb box of it for $161, which includes shipping. You might want to get a box from ffexpress and then the rest from your LFS. Or if you like the rock you get in the first box you could get another box and then get the rest from the LFS. That way you can save some money and get some LR from different "growing locations", bettering your chances of getting different species of Coralline. :)

This can be true. If you add un cured live rock to a tank, likely there will be a small spike that can come up here and there, from the dying life. If the rock is cured, most likely you will not have a spike, or a 'mini cycle.' I would try to buy cured rock as often as posible, or you can cure it yourself if you wish

hey, IMO when you are cycling the tank in the very beginning I would go with un cured because when things grow back they stay in your tank, and you can buy uncured and when you ship LR even when it says cured shipping will have die off on the LR.

No, i'm talking about adding this to an already asstablished tank, not a new tank
