Live Rock and Base Rock...

Hiya, so I know that you shouldn't exceed 1.75 pounds of LR to a gal...or is that a big scandal like bristle worms being bad, Also I was wondering what would be the maxium amount of base rock that you could go with (lets say for a 150 gal tank)

I have to completely disagree with your statements. 1.75lbs of live rock per gallon, is another myth out there. IMO, the more rock the better, although it can take up space in the tank. I have 145lbs of live rock in my 80 gallon, along with another 40lbs of live rock in the sump. Just comes to show you that you can have almost any amount of lvie rock, from a couple pounds, to a couple hundred pounds. It's just a guideline to what you should have, it's not exact.

Anyway, base rock should be used behind the main live rock (lets say fiji). The base rock will likely not have as much photosynthic life, as the fiji rock. I would say 200+lbs total would be a general line, but remember it's not exact! About 125lbs of live rock, such as fiji/tonga, and about 75lbs of base rock should be great for a 150 gallon tank. This is really mostly up to you, and your ideas. This is what makes your tank, yours :wink:

I just received about 30 lbs of fiji
there is 40- 50% more weight in this rock, than what ever i bought 2 years ago.
better rock=more pourse=more price=less needed

also with a deep sand bed less rock should be needed also.

my 110 gal has about 90-100 lbs of liverock.
if i add any more, then i would also need to add more circulation pumps $$.

These are things I was told while setting up.

so i bought enough rock to make caves and look ok.
