Is there a rule of thumb when determining how large one should make their sump.
Thanks

ideally, i think a good sump is one that's a little less than half of the main tank volume...i.e. on 100g tank, maybe a 40g sump...but it's a matter of preference. personally i think you should go with the largest you can fit in the space you're planning to house the sump.
I agree with phistio
any sump is better then no sump at all

I agree what was said above. I would say a good sump size, as phistio already said, would be around 50% of the main tank; an 80 gallon would have a 40 gallon sump (on average), a 100 gallon would have a 45-50 gallon sump, a 50 gallon would have a 25-30 gallon sump, and so on.

I find that with 50 gallon tanks and less usually tend to have smaller then half that I have seen. There is usually like 15-20 gallon tanks that people have for 50's and smaller. If you are buying one try to buy a long for room, reptile sections have long tanks that work well IMO.

If you are talking about a reptile tank, called a terrarium, they have no where near the strengh as an aquarium as! When most terrariums are filled up with water, esspecielly in larger amounts, sometimes the pressure will actually crack that glass. You would want something much more strong, and specificly built for the use of aquariums.
