I can just as easily turn back on you and say Why do you like the green open brains? lol
I like them from their glowing bright green/blue polyps waving with the current. The coloration is just amazing under actinics, same goes for the Red goniopora :)

I will have to say montipora caps. Something about the formations that they create, those whorls, and it helps that they're a fast grower. I hope to collect as many different variations of monti caps as i find.

yeah, i have to say carnation (dendronephthya) rocks!!! also alevepora, blastomosa, and caulastrea are some of my favorites.
Do you like to get frags or larger pieces?
I have a friend of mine who has Chinese Staghorn and that green color is really great.

Thanks everybody! Yes, the tank is a 120g and the lights do get hot!!! However, I've got a few fans and a chiller to keep temps in the 79-81 degree range.
LOL, I bet your tank plays with your electricity bill huh? Anyway cool tank and keep up the great work!

ReefBum, check out This thread (http://www.ReefLounge.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=46) Your tank is under some of the most beautiful tanks i've ever seen! You should really think about entering in the tank of the month contest, see the tank of the month forum for more details :)

Reefbum,
Awesome pics.
I think my favourite coral would be A. millepora. I haven't been able to get my hands on this species but intend to get some soon. the wide variety of bright colours is great, blues, oranges, greens, yellows and the colonies that have a mix of these colours are spectacular.

try garf.org Irisservice got a whole bunch of soft coral frags from there!

Hammers are cool. Can be aggressive i think. I am really starting to like collony polyps. I dont have any but I think they are really nice. I just wonder if they would take over a tank or would other corals fight them off.

Phistio, just out of curiousity, could you ID that gorgonian? I've tried to get Eric Borneman to ID it, but so far no reply from him, although some members there, including reefdiver, Project Reef, and a few others know that it wouldn't be photosynthic. I think Ali's friends used to have one like it, and theirs died in 6 months even with the best of care :? If you can ID it, I would be suprized!

it's yellow, right? (btw, that polyp extenxion is amazing!!! )
i would have to assume it's a deeper water species first, off hand. i'l try an dig a little further...

This goni was just a fortunate score really. Was labelled as liverock and was pretty weak looking in shop tank but when it entered my tank under the MH lights it thrived. So was pretty lucky with that. Enjoyable first coral though. Great water movement :)

Thanks for the compliments! After 2 weeks of searching the net, I found out the species. It's called Blue Bush Gorgonian Acalycigoria sp. Acording to Randy, the owner of www.themarinecenter.com (highly recommended place!), Not a lot is known about his one as it's
relatively new to the trade. It does require strong, preferably
alternating current. It's obviously nonphotosynthetic, but the polyps
are large enough that it seems to do well in some tanks unlike
gorgonians with tiny polyps that just get overgrown with algae. These
definitely aren't wimpy in that way. Although it will require plankton
feeding, our observations are that this gorgonian will fare better than
most non photosynthetic gorgonians. You're unlikely to find any accurate
info out there on this one, but the long term verdict is not in.
I'm very happy to say that it has been doing great! There were a couple of dead spots on it (no tissue), but I can see those are now gone since I bought it. I notice daily that the tissue around the dead spots is growing polyps (I got some nice ones!), which is amazing. I have a few pics here.

This now shows, that the gorgonian is regrowing it's tissues.
Very impressed! :D That is some great recovery work. What sort of additives were you using?? It would be great if I could get that flowerpot of mine to regrow in the skeletal(dead) parts.
My FAVORITE has to be the Waving Hand(Blue)!
Nice specimen Fiji was wondering what genus?? speceis?
Frogspawn? Pulse? I am fairly new to corals so I want to find out as much as possible. :) Tnx

Hmm...
I never dosed anything, all the levels were perfect without any additives. I know gorgonians will need calcium, my calcium is at 500ppm. They tent to dislike lighting, which is why im worried (i'm upgrading to 2, 400wt Radiums), so i'm hoping everything will turn out ok. I've only seen it out on the market twice, some can be cheap, others can be quite expensive, it all matters on the LFS and size. I also have it under direct current with the power head (you can see iton the top right of the gorgonian picture). It shoots the water down, bounces off the substrate, and hits the gorgonian in 3 different places ( bottom, right, and top). I blast it with phytoplankton weekly (about 15ml), DT's to be exact.
Also, to answer your last question, I saw it at the LFS. I've done some heavy reaserch on the care of nonphotosynthic gorgonians, but never expected it to be extremely hard to care for (says many members of various boards). I bought the one which looked the healthiest; nice polyp color and extention, and most tissue remaining. If the polyps aren't opened, don't buy it.

to add to the fact that they "don't like light"...they are a deep water, atlantic specific species...in deeper water reef, not much of the spectrum reaches (in terms of nanometers) to where the gorgonians thrive.
i would suspect they would thrive in lower lighting tanks, and love actinic lighting.
also, i believe (from what i can see in the pictures) there is a parasite feeding on the gornonian.

How are those frags coming along PH?
Pineapple House
01-30-2003, 07:42 PM
Exelent. The damage has healed up completely on the big one, and the frags are growing nicely :) The dead spot has also healed up a small bit, although not much. I found a 'red polyp' gorgonian growing on the back of the rock, containing 2 very small red polyps with a small branching. I'm hoping over time this will look like the big one, just with red polyps instead of blue...that's gonna be fun to see. As for the pictures, likely on Saturday or Sunday I can give you some.
