At work we run a T-1... that is where I usually do my browsing. At home I have a cable modem. With all the stuff I do online... I can justify the extra $20.

There are different speeds for DSL versus CABLE.Some DSL are slower Some are much Faster. Example in my office we had a T1 and switched to DSL because of price and the T1 is 1.5mb up/down and so is own new DSL.

the difference is:
ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) Upload speed and download speeds are different. You may download at 1.5 mbps while you can upload at 768kbps per second
SDSL (Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line) your download and upload speeds are the same.
With xDSL your speed is consistent due to the dedicated line, but your speed is regulated by the distance to the DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer)
DSL is nice, because you usually get multiple static i/p's, but it has its own set of downfalls... I am currently using a cable modem.

LOL Scott. I'm using a cable modem, but how on Earth are y'all only paying $20 a month??? It's either $35 or $40 here. I know what you mean about slow, when I visited my mom over Christmas the computer there was on a 56k. Yikes. It was so slow that I just gave up. And I would absolutely agree with matrixnyc, Now that I have cable I can never go back to dial up. I would go without television just to keep the cable modem. Now I get frustrated if a page takes more than a few seconds to load up.

by $20 extra reef stuff I think he meant he pays 25 for dial up and so he doesn't want to pay the 45 total for cable. However my cable is only 30 a month so why not get cable I can download at 2.3mb per sec sometimes it is slower like when my neigbor uses theres but well.... also there is a big debate about cable vs dsl however some dsl is alot slower say if you live in the middle of nothingville usa and you are 200 miles from your provider cable would be better but if your isp was across the street then dsl would be better.

If you lived 200 miles away from anything then you won't be able to get dsl (probably not cable either, probably not even analog). That's one of the pitfalls of dsl- you have to live close to a station or a neighbor that has it.

ok first off dsl is not shared with a neibor you have a direct connection with the server. cable is shared with a neigbor though. Also the only way to get non dial up in nothingvill would be satilite. So you are correct about that.
sorry I dont intend to sound like a jerk  but it is just how i type

I don't live out in the boonies and I can't get dsl at all because I don't live close enough to someone else that has it or a central office. Here is "The Straight Dope" about dsl and cable modems:

ok living close to somebody who has it means nothing as far as your service goes. I had a friend who's next door neigbor had it and he couldn't get it because he was like 10 feet to far away.
here check out this site:
http://bandwidthplace.com/tech/?v=dslvcable
I think it is a bit more advanced than the one you put a link too though.
so that site is b.s. they need to check there facts, and also an ip address is only able to be used against you if
1) you respond to the hackers email then go to his website ( his website would have a cookie onit)usually it is from a chat room he/she offers you a pic
2) your an idiot and download a anti hack that actually hacks your comp (ive seen it b4)
3)Also you could just be unlucky and open an email but that is not because of your ip it is just a virus so your site is "wack dog"
you should always scan downloaded files before opening them
and just so you know i am full of b.s and made this all up so no hard feelings ok

Same with me. T-1 at work and cable modem at home. My cable is $29 per month for the first year. After that I believe it goes to $39. I do have a friend that called the cable company and said he felt $39 was too much, and he wanted to cancel. They gave him another year at the intro. price.
It's only money! you can't take it with you. You might as well enjoy the speed of cable now!
