I have been looking at this system. Anyone here have anything good or bad to say?Our LFS was using one on a 75. They neglected the macro algae and it crashed. How often do you prune and do you skim also. I know Ecosystems says skimming is not needed, but I always feel naked without one!

I have one on my 72 G Bowfront it model 3012.I have been very happy with it. I never had a skimmer on it but plan on getting one to help out. The only problem that i have with it is that there is alway stuff floating around in the tank. They call it marine snow, but that what corals feed on anyway. They only get pruned when the macros get near 2" to the water line.
Have you guys ever used mircale mud by ecosytems?

I heard a good line at a seminar....the only miracle is that someone actually buys the stuff!
It's not that the product does not work, its the fact that it is that overpriced that the results can more efficiently be reproduced with a sandbed and dosing some iron (iron is currently being evaluated for its possibly beneficial impact on caulerpa and other marine plants).
Add to this the fact that Ly Seng is extremely secretive over the ingredients and the fact that it has to be replenished every year (lends more to the fact that the iron is the key ingredient) and all I see is a money racket of a simple product.

I built myself a DIY copy of the ecosystem out of an old 55g acrylic a local petsmart was getting rid of. I have no complaints at all, it seems to be doing what it states it does.

drscheck:
You should post photos of it in the DIY section :)
So we can all enjoy it.

I don't think I have any current photos of the system, but I can take some this week.

Exactly, but the theory is so simple, the expensive "miracle mud" is not needed to achieve the results! There is no debate that the product works, just that they are ripping consumers off!

I have been using the MM system in my DIY sump as well. I have never used a skimmer on this system and it does very, very well. I would agree that it is expensive and one can achieve the same results in other ways, like HoopsGuru pointed out.
I harvest my calurpa about every three to four weeks. I also enjoy not having to have to buy a skimmer, find a place to keep it and maintain it. It is also keeps me from having to have a large DSB in the main tank. I do not like the looks of a lot of sand in the main tank. Because of the size of my stand, my sump could not be very large so a DSB in there would not be a good option either IMO. For me it works out well. Just my experience so far.

cisco/the tiler,
Mr 4000 had to tear down his tank because of condensation problems. It was eating away at his house.

I just installed a protein skimmer to work along with the ecosystem filter. I felt that the the ecosystem was just not enoughs so i added a skimmer.I have to say that i emptied the skimmer twice. I will keep everyone up to date with status.

Hate to say it fellas, but if a product delivers what its supposed to...how can you call it a rip off? Caveat emptor I say. If you can do the same thing cheaper more power to you, but don't tear a guy down for figuring out something people want, and then having the nerve to make a profit from it...it sounds an awful lot like...a business!?!?
