Depending on your setup, I would probably just throw out the bioballs. Add a Deep SandBed and use the wet/dry as a place to keep your heater, skimmer, etc. All the bioballs will do is trap debris and raise your nitrates.

Since i'm a big fan of biological filtration, I would dump the bio balls (If you can, take them back to your LFS. Sometimes they will give you store credit for them) and add live rock instead. This will provide not only more biological filteration to the tank, but will have a place for pods, worms, etc. to hide out, and hopefully reproduce. The bio balls, as stated, will be a nitrate factory, turning mosts wastes into nitrate. While nitrate isn't too toxic to fish and invertibrates, high amounts could cause damage. It's best to keep them as low as posible, esspecielly in a reef.
