AFM=Aquarium Fish Monthly, magazine
ALK=Alkalinity, measure of buffering capacity of water

Actually,

It helps quite a bit. Many people hate writing out the whole word (or sentence in some cases), and will put abreviasions instead. If someone doesn't know what they mean't, they can easily mistake it for another term/word.

It helps to know them quite a bit, IMO :wink:
