View Full Version : Baking Soda?
Ive read in TCMA book that adding baking soda(sodium bicarbonate) to your tank helps to buffer the waters pH. Obviously the author of the book agrees with this method, what do all of you think?

Some people use this as a home made buffer along with washing soda.
Here is the recipe
Mix 6 parts of Baking Soda with 1 part of Washing Soda
Just incase your scratching your head

What amount of SW will that mixture treat?

My only caution is that with this method, it is easy to overdose if you don't know what you are doing. Make sure you study up and take your time.

While some people use baking soda to adjust ph it is not very stable. You can very easily raise your ph above range. I would be very careful with this. You can also go to almost any swimming pool store and ask for Sodium Carbonate This is a chemical that will also raise your ph(very cheap). To raise alkalinity you can ask for Sodium Bicarbonate(also very cheap). You can even get calcium flakes. Now with that said I do not Know if this is safe to use in any type of aquarium.
