royal gamma died

My royal gamma that i've had for about 1 year died last night. I cant figure out why, everything is normal I tested two days ago and the results matched this mornings. everything at zero and ph at 8.2 temp 80 and cal 475. the fish ate well yesterday and so did the other tankmates. this morning the gamma was already chewed on by my nass. snails, but nothing looked bad about the fish... I don't know..mysterious..baffles me.
how long has other people kept gammas and how big did it get. my lfs has a gamma thats about twice the size of the one I lost. so a better question is how big will they grow in captivity from a small size(1 in)? thanks :cry: :cry:

That sucks, sorry to hear of your loss. :(

Mine is about 2.5" and I think its about maxed. Its tough to speculate what may have happened. What did you feed it? Sometimes even though they are eating, it is not the best food for it. I would definitely keep an eye on your chromis to see if they show any abnormal behavior to rule that out in your tank.

One reason, maybe an internal desease, which might have been growing inside its organs. Internal diseases usually will have 3 periods of time. One, being the free stage, where it trys to find a host. Second, would be when it slowely infects the fish. Third, when it releases its young. Some diseases will have next to no symtoms that could be seen on the outside, or very little symtoms.

Another, would be that a larger fish(or smaller) harassed it to death. What are your current tank mates? Royal Gramma's (Gramma loreto ) are very hardy fish, but can be aggressive with fellow tankmates. It may have started a fight, which ended in death the next day.

Some more reasons, would be that it got stung, but either an anemone, frogspawn, hamma, fire coral, tube anemone, torch, elagance, etc. That might have harmed it.

One last idea, would be If there was something from the LR that killed them (mantis, crab, etc) Although if it was this, I would think that you wouldn't have seen the bodies, as the murderer would have eaten it.
