I have a blue tang and purple tang in the same tank. They did fine, so I wanted to add a yellow tang. Immediately the purple starting nipping at the yellow one so I got him out. Should I take him back to the store or will the purple one calm down?

How big is the tank?
In most cases conspecies will not tolerate each other in a smaller environment. Sometimes rearranging the rockwork will force them to re-establish territories but not always.
Cheers

Well I hope he has a 100 Gal or larger for that purple tang.
Here....go to this post of mine on tangs and surgeons...it has a lot of helpful information. http://www.reeflounge.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3902
Also...this post contains valuable info on what you can and can't place in a certian sized aquarium. http://www.reeflounge.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=30519#30519

I had a purple and yellow tank in my 90 FO tank for a long time. I always like both fish and wanted them together so I was told by a long time marine only guy to get the yellow tang first and wait a least 2 months before adding the purple tang. and it worked well. Something about the purple tang being more territorial when introduced first.

I think I'll return the yellow tang. I want some color in my tank. Can you guys suggest something yellow or orange? Flame or yellow dwarf angel. I read to be cautious of these in a reef though.

If you want a nice fish check out a Royal Gramma. Very colorful and reef friendly

you should have ordered off liveaquaria. even with the shipping/handling, it would still be less than 50$

o well, if you were willing to pay 50$ for it, that must mean that you really like it, and it is worth 50$ to you, and thats really all that matters.

fishaddict If you want to try a dwarf angel, you do have to be careful, some are just fine and some will nip at your polyps, clams and other soft corals. I personally have had great luck keeping several types of dwarf angels in my reef tank. I would suggest flames, bicolors or lemonpeel angels if those are the colors you want.

I have a Lemonpeel and so far he's left mine alone. I do make sure I feed him once a day though to keep him from wanting to nip at the polyps. Also, he's still a juvenal so hopefully I will be able to keep him from ever wanting to nip at the coral.

I live in saint john, nb canada, right on the ocean, but its the atlantic ocean :) and all the fish we get have to be shipped from like california and stuff thats why there so much, my mail order site has them for 14.99 and its about 10$ a bag for shipping but you have to order 8 bags at a time. I know its alot but he's really fun to watch, and i won't be putting a 8 bag order in for a few weeks my tank has cycled for allmost 3 months now i just wanted something for the time being, after awhile i think i'll move him to my 10 gal nano that i'm cycling ( with a cocktail shrimp)

Have you ever checked to see if there are any restrictions about transporting live marine animals across the border? Not that you'd actually have to declaire them  , but just to be safe you may want to know that.

Yeah there are restrictions, if the animal or plant is native to america, however most marine aquarium supplies are certainly not.

Around 60 miles from the border, not far at all.
