View Full Version : Sump... Wet/Dry... What's the difference?

Hello, everyone. I haven't been in the hobby very long and due to my limited amount of cheese I have been taking my time getting different pieces of equiptment for my tank. Well, I have been looking at wet/drys and I saw what some people call a sump. I looked at the construction of a sump on another board here and they look similar to me. Could someone tell me the difference?

the main difference is that wet/dry usually refers to a sealed, contained system, and a sump allows gas exchange as there is often no top on a sump.

there are different variations of wet/dry's that allow gas exchange as well...but it would be my reccommendation to go with a sump...just my opinion...
sumps are easier for maintenance, as you can add supplement, make-up water, perform water changes, etc.
