hi all....

i'm new...got a question on lighting for my first attempt at a nano reef

i have access to a PC lighting hood for pretty cheap....2 bulbs x 13 watts....

it comes with my choice of 6500K White, Blue Actinic and Red/11000K White bulbs.....

what combination of these would work well for a small reef tank ? I'd like to keep a small number of polyps..though i dont know what kind is good to start...still doing homework there.....

so whats the best light option from those listed above ?

thanks ahead of time guys!
Greg

What size is your tank?? Out of the above color temps I would go with one Blue Actinic and one 11000K. The 6500k has a yellow color...

sorry........its a 10 gallon...the hood is 10" with two PC bulbs side by side....... i plan to have it suspended above the tank several inches by a chain suspended from the shelf above the tank.

i'm thinking about leaving the top open, but maybe i'll use a screen or something....i dont want a closed lid due to temperatures

i've kept fresh water tanks since i was a wee lad, but this will be my first attempt at anything salt water.

i think i've read just about every web page on the internet on the topic....but lighting still confuses the crud outta me!

thanks!

I assume you are planning to keep corals?? If so you could keep some low light soft corals... but if you could add one more 13w PC IMO that would be better.

with just the 2 x13 watts for now (i'm very poor) do you have any recommendations for type of corals etc for a beginner, i have a few ideas i've picked up from web pages, but additional input is always welcome. i dont need exotic or anytihng....just affordable and not too fragil

Button Polyps, star polyps and mushrooms are hardy and very attractive.

Good Luck,
