It is soft and seems hollow inside.

It could be two things.
First, as you might know, coraline algea comes in many shapes and colors, black being one of them. Moroon, yellow, green, blue, purple, red, white, and even brown comes across the different colors coraline algea grows at.
Second, it could be a species of red slime algea.
Is this really soft, or crusty?
PH =)
It is soft. I was able to pierce it with a skewer. Thanks for the help.

It is hard to tell from the picture, but I think you my have had some bubble algae there. The LAST thing you want to do is spread it. It is a PITA. IF is was kind of roundish and it deflated when you poked it, that is probably what it is. It is actually a really dark green.
If it is bubble algea, you want to remove it carefully by hand and get it out of the tank without rupturing the ball. Tons upon tons of algae spores are inside. A rupture will result in spreading the things all over the tank.
Hope this helps.
