You must set the ad_network_ads_240.txt file to be writable (check file name as well).

Most of that nasty looking stuff that grows in dark places like that are sponges. As to what type, I would have no idea.

I agree.

I think it might be a Diazona violacea, which is a wild growing sponge, filter feeding the water for zooplankton and phytoplankton.
