I see in the stores quite often, them using the Eclipse tanks for a small reef. What do you all think about that??
I haven't had a reef in about 10yrs (lost it in divorce)..... Now my new husband wants to start one. BUT...I don't have the cash to really get him going on a nice one.
But thought about the Eclipse 12 that I see stores doing...just to see IF my husband will really get into this before diving into the BIG bucks of having a reef...<smile>
ANy thoughts??

while the eclipse 12 systems can be great starts for nano-reefs, they require mild modification to become suitable sytems...as well...smaller volume aquariums are not reccommended for beggining marine aquarist, as many problems in water quality can quickly arise...however...i don't see why you couldn't hold your husband's hand through the upkeeping of a new reef...
it's my opinion that you will have to teach him all you know about reef keeping, and the two of you can share a common interest in the hobby...
i tell you, my girlfriend knows more now about reefkeeping, than i did after a year, just from being actively involved with my...rather OUR, new hobby.
infact just two days ago, she came home with a wonderful candycane coral to put in the 'ole tankaroo...and she picked a vibrant, completely healthy species...
i planted the seed, and it's growing...reef keeping is a very likable hobby, once people have a slight understanding of marine life...
so, yes...if an eclipse 12 is "what can fit in the current budget of things," i encourage you to talk it over...discuss if it will meet your needs, and dicuss that things (for beginners) can be a little harder to maitain in smaller tanks. ask any local reefers you know for advice...find someone who can answer questions...(this may not be the person at your LFS either...sometimes merchants don't really know as much as they should)
if you guys are ready to fordge the waters...dive in!
best of luck!!!

"they require mild modification to become suitable sytems"
So what kind of mods need to be done?? I haven't really looked at these too close. Just always notice them sitting on the counters of all Pet or FS..almost always used as reef.
I do know it's harder to keep a small reef. I've also heard never use a corner/hex for reef or salt period as it's too hard. But I had one with no problems at all. We also had a 100gal. But the corner tank was my fav.
I also feel after 10yrs being out of it... I'm almost a beginner again.
