i have a 25 gallon nano...that's total volume. it's a half hex, with an IFS (integrated filtration system.) there is a false wall (3" section) in the main tank, behind that wall is my sump/skimmer. the tank dimensions are 23" w x 15"d x 16"t, and a 5" canopy that houses 2 55w PC. two 7,000k actinic, two 10,000k daylight. water flows through the overflow, through skimmer, and returns the output opposite the overflow via a rio 600. another rio 600 venturi is used for the skimmer...volume of the sump is roughly 3 gallons...main tank is 22 gallons...
in my tank, i have 20lbs of live sand, making a 1.5" deep bed...and about 35 lbs. of live rock...biological filtration is exceptional on this system.
inhabitants are:
2 peppermint shrimp
1 coral banded shrimp
1 spotted anemone shrimp (yucitanis)
2 condylactis anemone's
3 toadstools
2 brown zooanthids
1 flame scallop
2 fighting conch
1 yellow sand-sifting cucumber
2 turbo snails
10 blue hair hermits
1 tank raised percula clown
1 sailfin blenny
and a partridge in a pear tree! (not really)
i will be posting pictures very soon!!! i shoot 35mm slide film, have the film mounted and then put to disc...the process takes time, but hopefully the picture quality will be pure...

i'm surprised no one has given me flack for the two anemones...
it's been alomst 8 days now since my spotted anemone shrimp has gone A.W.O.L....i think a condy gobbled him up...
i got him in hopes that he would go back and forth between both condy's and help with nuetralizing both...i guess his immunity to one did not sit well, and the condy thought, "hmm...free lunch!"
kinda bumbed about the whole deal...i liked him a lot!
lol I was gonna say something but not sure if i really saw it anyway sorry

nice tank except i would get rid of the cucumber because if it is stressed or dies itll relase toxins thatll basically crash the tankbut if you wanna take the risk thats fine too it looks (the cucumber) but like they say looks can be decieving but over all its a very nice tank that looks well established,Chris

thanks for the heads up chris...but i'm well aware of the cucumber being toxic...before i had this guy, i had a huge Pseudocolochirus violaceus (Philippine Sea Apple)...talk about toxic...anyhow...there are no power heads for the cuke to get caught in...though if he gets too close to the overflow, i just watch him close...he was up against the overflow one morning after i came home from work...no harm though...
also...my tank has a long ways to come before i can call it "well" established...thanks!!!
phistio
11-23-2002, 05:02 PM
also...cukes have tell-tale signs they're about to "nuke" they look like they're practically melting...and the get all mushy...
trust me if i ever see that...i know that's my cue!

IMO, it's better to stay away from toxic cucumbers, esspecielly in smaller tank sizes. They will usually start to die when you least expect it. If you go away, and it died, it might be a disaster. Tiger Tail Cucumbers, Halathuria hilla are the least toxic of them all, only releasing a very small amount of toxin that will do nearly no damage to the tank live stock, or no toxins at all. They do best with 1 inch or more of Live sand. I have a few in my 80 gallon, and are very happy with them.
The one you have now, I think it's a Colochirus robustus is much less toxic than the Sea apple (Pseudocolochirus violaceus or Pseudocolochirus axilogus ) but still can do some damage to the tank. Just to be on the safe side, I would personally take it back and exchange it for a Halathuria hilla , or tiger tail cucumber. This is JMO!

i feel perfectly fine with the cuke...and see no real threat to having him in my tank...
if he were to ever nuke...i guess you guys could all say "i told you so!"
until then...he's a welcome addition...but thanks for all the warnings!

Nice tank.. and Why the heck am I the only one with a Green tip Condy? all the others I see have purple tips.. Hmmm
Likely this is a diffferent species of Condy anemones. The Purple tip condy (Condylactis gigantea) is different from the Green Tip condy (Condylactis gigta) Please note that i'm not exactly sure that the scientific name for the green tip condy is correct, so please do not take it as a fact.

i'm begging to think these condylactis' will be the death of my tank...
some of you may know i've been on vacation for the past week, and left the care of my tank in the hands of my roomate...no real worries, the tank (other than food for the fish is pretty well self-sustaining)...but roomie says he hasn't seen the blennie for a couple of days...hmm...and that the purple condy shrank, and was HUGE the next morning (how anemones poop).
so...i get home last night after long delays at the airport:evil:  ...MISSING: sailfin (algae) blennie, and male peppermint shrimp!!! no problem...we'll wait until feeding time in the morning...everyone shows
so this morning i wake up, and i'm doing a better inspection of the tank...(lights are on now)...hmm...still missing...ok, i'll feed 'em...the two don't turn out for breakfast...girfriend starts looking and she finds the blennie, dead, behind some LR in the back...
there's no telling what was the demise of lenny the blennie, he was well decomposed...(shrimp, hermits and others may of gotten the most of him) but i'm lead to believe that the purple condy had something to do with it...
i'm hoping the male Peppermint shrimp shows up...

My Condy ate my Domino Damsel.. the Domino was stupid enough to host the condy :( but otherwise the rest of my fish are smart enough to stay clear of the condy

Is that some Montipora Digitata I see in the last couple of pictures? I think I also see an Montipora Cap. in one of the last pictures (Cannot tell with that picture). How are they doing? :)
Very nice tank dude! The tank has changed quite a bit! Looks great!

yes that is Montipora digitata and they're doing quite well. see, i told you i'm groing things i shouldn't be under PC's (and one ballast is on the fritz) but all in all...evrything's is quite happy.
most all of these pictures were taken in the dark with the flash only...that's why they look a little creepy. i'll be posting some more soon!

finally...
moved the tank and in doing so...re-aranged a few things...
here's the new T-5's...take note of the overdriven "actinic" (not true actinic) bulb from the ice cap 660. the lights are still very bright, but i'm pushing them with the wrong ballast! :(

How much would it cost for me to set up a 28 gallon nano reef (not sure of the terms, im new with the salt water aquariums) without the cost of the tank. I was thinkin something with an anenome and some clown fish and a cleaner shrimp, with live coral and live sand. Could someone help me out with an approximate price?

Alot of people say 30-50 dolars once completed thatswith corals fish rocks everything. Youcould get it setup for around $300.

Question for you Phistio,
How many pounds of live rock do you have in there?
I am looking to change my FO 30 gallon to a small reef. I have a filter and a protien skimmer, so I am not looking for the rock to do much of the filtering and I don't want to fill my whole tank with rock. I mostly want fish and a few soft corals.
Thanks

clarity plus makes the same tank, however mine was made by a custom acrylic maker (steve frosti-aka, the acrylicman...find him on ebay).
i think i had about 20-30lbs. of LR and about 2"-3" inches of LS...

the tank has been emptied, and transferred into the 110 for a while now. down the road, i plan to make it a nepthya darkwater tank. been meaning to for a long time, just haven't been able to.
i also thought about putting it in my upstairs office, running it inline withth 110, and making it a seahorse tank. but dunno yet.
unless of course someone wanted to buy this tank off of me...

what is that???? it would make a nice seahorse tank hooked up to the 110.

nepthya are brightly colored soft corals, that are non-photosynthetic. they are some of the hardest corals to keep. a darkwater tank is one i've been wanting to do for a while now. you may have heard me talk about cold cathode lighting. Tubastrea would also make a good candidate to go in the dark water tank...as well as some non-photosynthetic gorgonians.
the idea is a dimly lit tank, much like being in a cave or overhang of the reef. few problems to overcome in such a tank. pH being one problem i'd have to be sure to keep up on. flow would be another challenge. in the wild, these types of areas are usually extremely high in current, so, i'd be looking to try to have an overturn of about 20 to 30 x's the volume.
like i said, it's way down the road... :| :?
here are some nepthya corals...

i tore down the 110 and gave it to a friend as an engagement present. i took out a few things and threw them in the 25 and started it back up again.
now here's my 25 macro-nano:
http://www.digitalwraith.com/images/phistio/tank/25.jpg
i took five of my most favorite rocks from the 110 (a large 24" piece of branching tonga, and a few others) and my clown fish, banded coral shrimp, a watchman goby, and a few chromis. 3 colonies of caulastrea, a colony of monitpora, a rare colony of Heliopora and a rare colony of blastomossa wellsi.
it's lit by a 250w hamiltion with a 14,000k. and 1 Marc Weiss MoonBeam,
circulation and flow: 3 powerheads on a RedSeaPharms wave controller.
the sand is brand new Southdown Playsand (i had 3 bags sitting in my garage) and a few pounds from my big tank.
i do 5 gallon water changes with RO/DI and TropicMarin sea salt once a week. (i need to do one and clean my tank a lil)

Macro Algae What?? Wow phistio, looks like a terrarium. Anywho I saw some pics of nepthya pics and figured Id chime in. I just finished moving and have my tank set aside for my non photosynthetic reef. Im going to be using a 55 and changed my plans around to utilize another 55 as a cryptic refugium inside the tank stand. Dont wanna hijack your thread, just figured id start a conversation :).

this tank recently got stolen...
i moved back out to california recently...and a bunch of stuff got stolen. it's a fiasco with the moving company, and as it turns out, as much as i hate to we'll probably have to sue them.
my 200gpd RO/DI, calcium reactor, 175w hamilton MH and ballast, and my 25g tank, stand and canopy were all in the same box, wave master, skimmer, and all the pumps. it was a pretty decent size box. one stop shop for someone...and they have a pretty nice little setup now. if i ever see pictures of the setup on the web...well...i hope i don't, cause i'll be buying a plane ticket to their house.
along with the tank...a pinball machine, some antique furniture, my golf clubs, and a bunch of my framed photography also got taken.
