The bare minimum tank is a 75 gallon for tangs...as stated by many reefers. I have a 75 with a yellow tang and he is very happy in the tank. you would be able to put other fish in the tank also. Here is a list of what I have in my tank....
Flame Angel(1)
Royal Gramma(1)
Firefish(1)
Algae Blenny(1)
Yellow Tang(1)
Percula Clownfish(2)
Scooter Blenny (1)
They all get along great...the only fights I have in my tank is between the Coral Banded Shrimp and Yellow Tang then also the Arrom Crab and all the other fish.

I have a purple tang in my 58 gallon and he is doing great, he has been there for over a year. The full grown size does matter but the main thing about tangs is they are ocean dwellers. What I mean by that is they do not spend their entire life on one reef they swim out in the open waters. What you want to make sure of is that the tang has plenty of room to swim around. They prefer long tanks as opposed to tall tanks. I think a 77 would be a good choice. Tangs like to dart around the tank and have plenty of cracks to swim through.

My yellow tang has been with me over two years now. I always wanted a Salt water tank for powder blue tangs but everything I read says they are too tricky, and my wife wanted a yellow tang. I got it for her, and I am glad I did. He is happier now when I moved him from my 75 to my 180 and is now best friends with the Desjardini I got 8 months ago.

I love yellow tangs too. I am thinking about getting a 65 gal tank and geting one after i get enough money. but if ur gonna get one they only do good with just one yellow tang, or a school of 6 or more. they are very territorial and will fight to the death with that white spike on their tail.
