View Full Version : what fish for a 29 fowlr
What would you put in there?
When I think of FOWLR I think aggresive fish. Unfortunetty 29 gallons is a little small for most agresive fish.
You could also do a cardinal breeding tank. At Reefs UK http://www.reefsuk.org they have a lot of info on this in the Article section.

in a FOWLR i had a lionfish, a yellow tang, a sebae clown, and a 3 stripe damsel...course i was pretty new at the hobby then...
i might get 1 dwarf lion for your tank...or maybe a huma...but you're a little limited onsize...maybe a small box fish...

Zack, I am in the same spot as you. I have a 30 gallon tank with 40 lbs of live rock, and 60 lbs of live sand. I have no idea what to put in it. I really like the Valentini Puffers, and think I might go with one of those. my specs are 30''x12''x24''. Im not sure if thats big enough for a Valentini but I think they only get about 4 inches big. Anyways, good luck

What about damsels? Their are many types. At www.liveaquaria.com they have a cool yellow deepwater damsel.

Hi All, New to board and salt. It seems like I have the same setup as you guys. What type of fish did you end up with?

Dwarf lions are cool ~ just like the real thing onlycompact. Don't underestimate the beauty of assorted damsels. You could also try a clownfish, although maybe not with damsels.

Well, I've got plans.. . Had them forever, for a FO tank with a dedicated species in it.. Its a toss up for me on Puffer, Lion or maybe even Sea Horse.
Gotta be something exotic I think though.. I mean if you go through all the trouble, get something that really stands out and is something to talk about when people come over.. :D

You can check out my sig for what I have in my 29 FOWLR. I get a lot of criticism for having the French Angel in there, but he's tiny and is very happy in the 29. The thing with putting this kind of fish in a 29 is that you have to have a plan for when the fish gets too big for the small tank. So if you plan on upgrading in the future, or if you have friends with larger tanks who are willing to take your fish after they've outgrown your tank, I say go ahead and get the fish you like.
I've seen a dwarf lion do well in a 29gal. If I were in your shoes I'd do some live rock, cycle the tank and put in a clownfish and maybe one other fish, maybe 2 Chromis while cycling and they would be fine with the clown. Others may say just go straight with the clownfish first so that it will have an advantage in dominance in the tank over any other fish later added.
