Anyone know how loud the Little Giant 4MDQX-SC is supposed to be? I just set my tank up and I find that that motor is very loud. As a matter of fact it's the loudest component I have!!! It's even louder than my furnace. Are these motors supposed to be so loud?

I have the same model you have i belive. Its rated for like 1225GPH at 3' head.

Its about as loud as a quite hum. I would imagen if it was inside a cabinet you would not hear it at all.

Is your pump putting any bubbles into the tank? It could be that its cavataing air and that is causing more noise.

Maybe the impeller is not on correct and its banging aganst the side.

All the little giant pumps I have seen are very quite. In fact thats what sold me on them.

MY PC is louder than that pump.

I agree with fishfreek, I have two Little Giants and neither is loud, what you describe is hideous. Make sure that the pump is level and that you not getting any cavitation as stated above.

I have tried 2 different 4mdqx pumps and they are way too loud. I think the stand makes it louder, at least it was in my case on 2 different tanks. The noise I had came from the fan itself. I recently tried an Iwaki and it is much quieter.

I have mine mounted on a thick rubber mat like one you use to cushion your feet if you are on them all day. I have the same pump and it has only a low hum. I put it on the rubber mat just incase there was any vibration inside the stand that would resonate. Hope this helps.

Did that help looking to get the same pump!
Some people also recommend not conecting direct to pvc but use 6" of flexible tubing to stop pipe vibration. Also placing a foam mousepad under pump.

The pump comes with 4 rubber grommets that are to be used with the 4 mounting holes.

I used both of the methods you describe. I have the 4 rubber grommets under the pump and also I am using a few inches of flex hose. The pump I have does not vibrate so much but I guess that would be more of an individual pump characteristic given that all it takes is for the impeller to be just a bit off center with its weight for it to introduce a vibration.

I did used flexible tubing for the last foot. The foam mouse pad might work too, it's just not as thick as the mat I used. I also put a peice of carpeting on top of that but I used that to help knock down some of the possible echoing effect I might get from all the water flow going into the sump. Not sure if really helps or not but it works in houses so I thought I would try it.
