Here's some pics of a ¾ gallon nano I set up last month. All seems to be going quite well. I think I may add some >1" frags and see what happens...

Tank Specs:
3 litre cube AZOO mini
7 watt 7100k PC lights
60 litre/hr hang on filter
no heater.

Inhabitants:
Razor Caulerpa Caulerpa serulata
Grape Caulerpa Caulerpa racemosa
Pink Colt Coral Alcyonium Linnaeus
Brown Star polyp Pachyclavularia sp.
Orange/Green/Brown zoanthid Zoanthus sp
Green mushroom Actinodiscus sp
Nassarius snail Nassarius sp
Cerith snail Cerithium sp

nice improvement over 1 month. just wondering is that a clip-on PC from target or something? I was looking into those before, but decided MH was the way to go. How is the spectrum.

The clip-on PC is just fine. The corals are showing great color and growth. The 7100k spectrum should not present any problems. The small size of the tank and the relative 7 watt Pc should actually support many different types of corals except for the size constraint. My LFS will be getting some small 1" blue Montipora Digitata's soon and will be giving that a try.

MH wouild be a little much on a tank less than one gallon but could be used on a larger mini-reef sized tank.

steve,

i'm sure you're fine with the clip on...but if you were wanting a broader spectrum of lighting, you could easily achieve that with some cold cathode lighting...

Have not seen any available locally yet. If you could provide a manufacturer link, that would help me in sourcing an alternative...

Thanks for the suggestion :D

Can you get t-5 in that short of a bulb?

as far as i know, t-5's don't come that small...

steve, i'll be happy to supply you with some cathode info...gimme a few to get all my resources together...

Sweeeeet, is a Nano that small hard to control? My wife and I were down at the LFS last night considering a 5g for our bed room. And I though that was small  . I'm not ready for that yet though...

Travis,

Nano's are not much different than any other size tank. The only thing you need to be very mindful of is there is little room for error. Being prapared and planning the set up and stocking prior to purchase would be a good idea.

The only real concern for me personally in such a small tank is evaporation. Something to be very careful of. Continual changes in salainty can harm the inhabitant over time. Other than that, I find maintenance relatively simple. A basic water change every two weeks seems to do the trick quite nicely... :D

:D Hello
Cool tank - I also was looking at this for a Nano tank to put on my desk at work. Only problem would be the amount of evaperation over the weekend. So it looks like I'll be going with the Eclipse-3

How often are you topping off and how much?

Thanks!
Steve- :P

I will usually need to add ¼-½ cup of fresh water daily. Sometimes more on warmer days..

Good luck with your eclipse.. 8)

how many watts do you recomend for a nano if you are going to run corals i heard like 3-4 watts per gallon

steve1s

I would use the 3-4 watt thing more as a guideline, not a rule.

Tank depth and height of the lights has much more to do with it than the gallons. As well as types of light dependant animals to be kept. Most Azoo's come with lights already.

The one on the cube came with a 7watt 7100k PC light.

How do you measure Salinity in such a small tank?

steve1s

Excellent question!!

Right now I just syphon out the water using a small length of airline tubing into the hydrometer. Not all that accurate but it does the job.

I am planning a few more different "species" nano's and will definately be investing in a refractometer prior to moving forward.

With a tank that small do you put any LR in or LS ?

steve1s
09-14-2003, 12:35 PM
The LR and sand where both scavenged from the 90 gal reef tank. Made it much easier to establish a healthier tank. Escpecially one that small. I am currently experimenting with a small digitata frag and will post a pic once there is some progress.
