Have you ever propogated a coral to sell/trade?

Just wondering how many people out there have grown their corals and traded or sold them??

I have done alittle here and there. But around where I live there are not alot of people who deal in reef tanks

A guy down the street from me does it. It helps pay for the hobbie/obsession, and it helps preserve the ocean. I plan on fragging once I get everything set up. I dont really plan on buying anything that came stright from the ocean.

I recently have propagated shrooms, Pachyclavularia, and most recently my Sarco.

I didn't find them as easy as I thought, I made mush out of my first shroom. :D

I have tried it once with some of my shrooms, worked very well for me :-) I cut 4 of them into 4 quarters, to make a total of 16 new shrooms. 3 sadly died a couple days later from infection, but the others were awesome! I'm planning on soon propogating my kenya tree coral, which seems to be spouting new arms on a daily basis :-)

I originally had no intention of fragging - but then once I started getting more addicted and had to have every brightly colored coral I could find, I now have to frag just to keep them from touching :)

Btw, still looking for more bright colors if anyone wants to trade :mrgreen:

At some point my husband will finally break down and let me have that second tank because this one just isn't big enough anymore.....

Propogate -
To cut a coral's 'hand' or 'arm' off and try to grow the cuttings into another coral.

It's a way to get more out of the coral. Take shrooms for an example. You cut the shrooms with a very sharp razor blade, in 4 quarters. You then add the quarters. You will then place the cuttings in a seperate tank with larger sized substrate, to avoide them moving around the current and setteling in an incorrect area. Once they are attached, you may place them in the main tank. This is just the general idea of it. Note there is a bit more to it than just this. Basicly, try to cut/break the coral's hand to make another coral.
