I have been receiving conflicting information about these gorgeous fish. Some people swear that they will tear other of their kind apart, while other people tell me that they are a schoaling species.

Anybody have more info on them?

Usually in a larger aquarium they can be put into very small groups, and will avoide agresion. But, it's best if they are left alone. Due to its aggressiveness towards conspecifics, it should not be kept in large groups. A larger tank is highly recommended for grouping.

Yea, they are perfectly reef safe. I think most if not all Cardinalfish are reef safe, and will do perfect in a reef tank.

I've read the aggresion comes in when a breeding pair has been established and other cardinals start to get attacked. Other than their own species they are reef safe and very docile.

they do best in small groups 2-4
they are known to breed in captivity in tanks as small as 15 gallons and maby even smaller
they arent very picky eaters and will eat from frozen to even flake
they are 100% reef safe fish
they are very docile and a good fish for a community tank

My personal experience w/ this species has been pretty good, though somewhat limited.I have one in a 92 gal reef aquarium.I would love to add another but was always told conspecifics would go to war.I did at one point add a P.J. cardinal, and though there was no outward agression on the part of the Banggai, the other cardinal seemed intimidated from the outset and only began to thrive when I moved him to another tank. AS far as choosing one of these fish for your reef tank, you can't go wrong.
The grace and and prescence of this animal in a reef environment has to be observed first hand. Best of luck, E.

Two Bangaii Cardinalfish males will fight to the death. A male and female will breed. One male or female kept singly is a great addition to any reef tank. The males are a little prettier with a longer dorsal.

I don't know too much about the species, but I do know that they had three pajama cardinalfish in a fish only tank at the albuquerque aquarium. They didn't do too much other than stay fairly still at the top of the tank, although that may have been due to the clown triggerfish that was lurking. They stuck close together and I have never heard of a pajama cardinalfish being aggressive. Just something to consider if you are really worried about how the Bangaiis might act.

This is not true, the females are bigger and have the longer dorsal fin. The males are smaller and have a shorter dorsal fin.

I have had mixed luck with these. I have had some that got along great and others that would pick on one to the death. I have purchased some that were getting along great in the store only to fight to the death once in my tank. They are known to eat any shrimp. I had one in my tank with a very large cleaner shrimp, probably twice as large as the cardinal, only to come home to find the tail hanging out of the cardinals mouth. Currently I have 3 PJ cardinals. I bought 3 from a LFS, 1 died but the other two went to opposite ends of the tank and would not go near each other. I decided to add another to see if I could get them to "hang out" but this was only 50% succesful. THe new one bonded with only one of the others. Now I have one that hangs out on the right one in the middle and one on the left. In my experience I do not think these ship well and do need a slower acclimation.

I love my Hi-Fin Cardinalfish. I bought 2 at my LFS and they ended out becoming a mated pair. They get along fine with my other tank residents. I personally have not seen any problems with my cards and my two large cleaner shrimp. In fact, they all hang out in the same corner of the tank.

My pair had babies about a month ago. I still have two youngins who are kicking and doing great.

They are probably one of my best additions to my reef. Sounds like it's hit or miss with them....but when it's a hit, you'll love the fish.
