I am upgrading my tank from a 55 gallon to a 75 that I am buying from a friend and I am looking to purchase a new skimmer. I will be putting this skimmer in a sump(tidepool 2) and am looking to spend around $250-330. I would like a skimmer with a smaller foot print so I have some room in my sump. Any recommendations...
Thanks,

well my recommendation would be either the MC500 ($410) or the AP600 ($585), but both of those appear to be out of your price range. if you think you can bump up your budget a bit, you can get one incredible skimmer.

I was looking into the asm's but was told that they were not made that well. Granted I am not going to be playing football with the skimmer, but I would rather buy something in the same price range that will be of better quality. I have been eyeing up the aqua c line of skimmers and have heard nothing but good things about them.

I am partial to Aqua-C. The only downside is the size of pump you need. But they produce alot of skimmate and are only as noisy as the pump.

I bought a AquaC 240 for my friend and it sucks.. PIA to adjust... If you are low on budget then buy an ASM like Mark said. I have one G2 /w Sedra 5000 on a 100G /w 50G sump and it works great. If you have more $ then buy Deltec for quality :) ...

I agree, if you are going to spend that much, you might aswell spend a few more dollars and get a Deltec, you will not find a unit that is made as well or functions aswell. But it is your money. We dont want to see you just buy something because it fits your budget.
Its better to get the best a little later then have to buy 2 different units when you find out the one you bought is not what you expected.
Just my 2cents :)

I never even had to fuss with my EV240. Set it up and it was kicking ass within 2 days. Ran continuously without any tinkering.

So how much skimmate do you get per day?

As long as it's not "nothing" like some of the SeaClone skimmers, the amount of skimmate is not particularly useful information. The amount depends greatly on how wet or dry you set the skimmer, and on the amount in the tank to begin with.
I have to drain the 6" diameter cup on my Euro-Reef every 3 to 4 days, and the skimmate is about coffee colored. Some people like a much more watery skimmate (Like Mike, for instance) that is more tea colored, and have to empty their cup daily or so.

Anybody have any discussion about Deltec skimmers? ;)

They're great skimmers. Very similar in design to Euro-Reef and ASM (ASM is a knockoff of ER's which I think may be a knock of Deltec?). But the Deltecs are much more expensive.

I built a 1 gallon external container with a carbon cap (to keep the stink down), and would have to empty it every week. It was dark in coloration, but not real thick. Coffee coloration may be the right description. What I liked was that it only took 1/2" of room above the cup to remove it (so it fit in my undersized cabinet), and the riser is the same size all the way down (making it easy to clean).

Doug,
I was looking at the skimmers you had recommended and was wondering if the MCE600 would be good for my 75 gallon tank. I keep corals and fish and would consider the tank medium stocked. I was also wondering if you could tell me how far down does the inlet tube go down. I want to hang this on the outside of my sump and I am not sure if the inlet tube is long enough. Is the inlet tube adjustable ?
If I am able to place it in the sump, I would like to place an order for the skimmer, can you help me out with where is the best place to purchase it from
Thanks for your help....

the inlet tube extends down about 7". i am currently out of stock of these items until my shipment arrives on the 31st, so i don't have an exact measurement. you can extend the tube a few inches by using some flexi-tubing if your sump is still too high. you can purchase the unit directly from me, but i have 40 of them coming in, and 32 are already sold. if you think you might want one, please call me soon. 877-DELTEC1.
thanks

I just got off the phone with Doug from Deltec and I ordered my skimmer(mce600). Thanks to Irisservice for all the helpfull info and helping me make a very informed decision, I feel I am getting the best skimmer for my needs. Now all there is to do is wait for the skimmer to arrive and set that baby up. I will post some pics of my new setup once I get it up and running....
