So I was beggining to get rather hyped up after seeing dozens of small black Cerith like snails crawling about my tank glass- they looked like Ceriths... They cruise the glass cleaning it...(not very well though) The body is at the same angle to the shell as a Cerith...

By chance I was looking up some things online and found out about a "false Cerith" Batillaria minima... dangit, thats them...

Oh well, major reef-keeping breakthrough postponed till another day then.

Does anyone know more on these lil buggers and their impact on a reef tank? The only information I can find says they arent of much value to a reef tank. Yet since they are breeding and I'm not feeding them, I assume they detrivours or scavengers, which cant be bad. (haven't seen them doing anything bad to anything desirable in the tank)

no harm, they still are efficient detritus and algae eaters. they are herbivorous, detrivorous, and will also eat diatoms and cyanobacteria if you're lucky. consider yourself lucky they're reproducing.

the only bad thing is they are easily picked off by blue-hair hermit crabs, as their shells are a highly desired size.
