I will always feel better with one. I don't care if Dr. Ron says they are worthless. :D I just can't see leaving what a skimmer pulls out in my water column. This just my opinion.

while i don't think they're useless...i unplug mine when ever i dose DT's...can't imagine having all that stuff i just put in, get pulled right back out...i know DT's says it won't happen...but maybe my skimmer is too efficient...

I think that anything that smells like that should not be in the water!!

so do you guys think having a refugima will be kinda like a skimmer in what it does?

not quite...skimmers and refugiums are different...

skimmers remove inorganic and organic material through surfraction...

a refugium use organic filtration as a form of biomesis...breaking down the compounds of inorganic materials...

while both help filtration, they serve different purposes...

Skimmers afford you a greater margin for error. I ran a 150g LPS tank for 2 years skimmerless. No problems. In fact, Xenia loves dirty water. I do not have the guts to attempt to run my 180 SPS tank skimmerless. My skimmer pulls 5 cups of black skimmate per week.
