I've just noticed a consistant release of what appears to be fumes/ smoke from one of my LR.

Any ideas??? I have been having ammonia problems... could this be a lil' critter releasing toxins? I do not have any cucmbers nor cow fish, etc.

Thanks to all that reply!

I dont think it would be anything harmfull at all, sounds like something is sexually reproducing by releasing sperm into the water. This might cloud the water a lot, but usually isn't too harmfull.

Can you tell us exactly where you are seeing this? Some species of rock boring clams, some polyps, hitchkiker anemones, etc. are known for reliesing sperm & eggs into the water attmpting to reproduce.

I'm not sure if this is what the fumes really are, just one posibility.

i would strongly doubt any critter releasing toxing...could be any of what Pineapple said. In addition, spaghetti worms in my 30g will periodically "spit" out the sand they draw in, comes out in a cloud....perhaps this is something similar?

As far as the ammonia, I would guess you have either too large a bioload or the tank is new. Either way, ammonia is dangerous for any inhabitants you may have. Provide more information (tank specs, etc) so we can maybe get to the bottom.

Any update? Did you find out what was causing the fumes? Just because you didn't intentionally add a critter doesn't mean one didn't hitchhike on the rock.
