This might sound kinda dumb, but I have never bought salt in bulk like that (considering I have a nano). I was wondering if there are any quality / longevity issues associated in purchasing salt in such a big quantity. I assume that consistency of the salt would be better, but I'm just worried about my ability to keep it in good health forf such a long time... I mean I use between 1-3 gallons per month and that would last me years until I got a bigger tank... which is precluded by my finding a better job. =(

Okay. I think I might just print the ad and take it to Petsmart and see if they will match it. They did it the last time I tried. This will save shipping costs.

Doc, I agree, you'd be better of with the smaller batches so it doesn't absorb to much moisture.

The new lids that IO buckets have are pretty good. They are designed so that you hit them with a hammer a few times to open or close them. The inside of the lid has a rubber seal. I think if not opened, or if you seal them tightly, moisture should not be that big of a deal.

Agreed, but he's talking about year's. Just from opening and closing the lid once a month you will get moisture in there. I really can't say for sure what it will do, but I know the salt will clump up, and end up forming insoluble compounds when it absorbs moisture.

what about using some sort of antimosturizer pack-thingy... like they put in new shoes or some high-end electronics? You know the ones that ssay not to eat them.

That's what the entire content's of the bucket are, just one big dessicant.

It is called Sillicate Gel and it absorbs moisture. But as Mike stated...your bucket of salt does exactly the same thing. Thats why they used salt in ancient imbolming techniques.
