perc changing color

I bought a couple of tank raised false percs, just over a month ago. They were in the tank at the store alone also. One has started to become more blackish brown behind it's head, between the first and second stripe. Is this normal. Could it be changing sex or is there something wrong with it. Thanks for any help.

:cry: sadly the perc in question fell victim to the overflow last night while we were away. Although he was still alive when I got home and tried to rescue him it was too late. Once he did finally join that big ocean in the sky, the brittle star did enjoy his new found dinner. So continues the circle.
