Was thinking of buying a used All Glass 150 from a fellow reefer and was wondering if anyone knows if the tank can be drilled?? One guy told me the bottom plate is indeed tempered and the sides are not. The seller told me the none of the panes are tempered. Any ideas??

As far as I know the bottom is tempered glass and the sides are not tempered glass. The sides can be drilled and the bottom cannot. Besides that, your probably better off drilling a hole in the back of the tank and putting a small overflow inside the tank with a bulkhead.

I called AGA and they said that all panes of glass in that particular tank ore NOT tempered.

I also did a little researching and found out that most of the tanks that do have tempered glass bottoms will be marked with a tag that says so. I also was looking at the AGA site and there is a * next to the tank sizes that do have temperd glass. djs

sounds like if they say it's not tempered then you have the green light...
are you going to attempt to drill your self? if you do, i can guide you through the process...
i've worked in several custom stained glass shops, and have experience drilling glass...

I am getting ready to turn an old 75 Gal tank into a combo Isolation/Refugium tank and need to drill it. I found out that the bottom plate is tempered so am planning to drill a single hole for the overflow on the side of the tank. You indicated you have drilled many tanks. I've already purchased the diamond hole saw bit. Do I have to take the tank apart to drill it, or can I drill it while ssembled. If I have to take it apart, how do I do it? Also, I do not have a drill press and will be drilling with a variable speed cordless drill. Will this work? any tips?
