View Full Version : sump/refugium for a 28 gallon tank?

I have a 28 gallon bowfront, and am about to put sand and rock in it (when I'm done I'll have about 20lbs LS, 50 LR, and 20 CC) as well as a bioball filled canister filter, and a hang on filter.
Now, I only plan on having maybe 3-5 fish plus the usual assortment of inverts and cleanup crew, but not so much as to overload the system. Is there any point in trying to build a small sump/refugium for my tank? Say, a 10-20 gallon one with partitions? Or is this just filtration overkill?

Make sure you take the bio balls out and replace them with rubble rock. Otherwise you will have a nitrate factory.

I think it's a great idea. You could put macro algae in it to help stop micro algae from growing in your main tank and pods could multiply in it. As long as it's not a canister filter that is sucking out pods (and only then if you are wanting to keep pods in your tank) then I don't see how you could have TOO much filtration. Also you don't want your filter to make more trouble for you then it is worth (like an ugf that lets detritus rot). Other than plumbing problems I have yet to hear of someone unsatisfied with a sump or refugium. There are also in-tank and hang-on refugiums if you don't want to bother with plumbing.

I putting a 5.5gal fuge on my 29 gal. I am using miracle mud and some algae. I think it will be very beneficial, it will add volume, stabilize ph, stabilize O2, control of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, and it will increase the population of pods in the system. So IMO there is nothing bad about adding a fuge to any system.
